I Tried Lokma in Ottawa, Here’s Why This Dessert Spot Is Worth a Visit
If you have a sweet tooth and you’re always looking for new dessert places in Ottawa, Lokma Desserts and Grill (St. Laurent) is one spot you might want to add to your list.
I recently visited Lokma in Ottawa for a collaboration, and I got the chance to experience more than just the finished desserts. I watched some of the treats being prepared right in front of me, from the dough hitting the waffle press to chocolate being drizzled over freshly prepared desserts and boxes being loaded with toppings.
And yes, the camera definitely had to eat first...
So, What Exactly Is Lokma?
If you’ve never tried lokma before, you’re probably wondering what those little dough balls covered in chocolate actually are.
Lokma is a traditional Turkish pastry made from fried dough. The concept behind Lokma takes that traditional dessert and gives it a modern twist with different chocolates, spreads, creams, fruits, cookies, nuts and other toppings.
The result is something that sits somewhere between a mini doughnut and a bite-sized pastry, crispy and golden on the outside with a softer centre.
What makes the experience even more interesting is just how many different combinations you can create.
My Visit to Lokma Ottawa
One thing I enjoyed about this collaboration was getting to see some of the preparation behind the scenes.
There’s something different about watching your dessert being made instead of simply receiving a finished box.
During my visit, I watched the team prepare several items, including their lokma, a freshly pressed kroffle-style dessert and one seriously loaded milkshake.
Then came the toppings.
Chocolate. Pistachios. Cookie pieces. Creamy spreads.
Basically, everything you probably shouldn’t be thinking about when you’re trying to eat healthy. But we were already committed.
The Pistachio Lokma Was a Standout, If you’re a pistachio lover, this is probably where I would start.
The pistachio-covered lokma immediately stood out visually, but what I liked was the combination of textures. You have the warm dough underneath, a creamy pistachio element and crushed pistachios on top adding some crunch.
Lokma currently has a Crunchy Pistachio option made with pistachio spread, white chocolate and real pistachios, alongside several other signature flavours.
And if pistachio isn’t your thing, there are plenty of chocolate-heavy alternatives.
Chocolate Lovers Have Plenty of Options, This is definitely not the place to come looking for a boring dessert.
Lokma’s menu plays heavily with chocolate and recognizable flavours, with combinations featuring Nutella, Kinder Bueno, Biscoff, white chocolate, milk chocolate and dark chocolate.
Some of their signature options include Istanbul, which combines white, milk and dark chocolate with Biscoff; Kebueno, featuring Kebueno spread and Kinder Bueno; and Nutella Banana, which is filled with Nutella.
There are also customizable boxes if you’d rather build your own combination.
My advice?
If you’re visiting with someone else, order different flavours and share. It makes the experience much more interesting than committing to one combination.
Then There’s the Kroffle – One of my favourite parts to film was watching the kroffle being made. If you’re wondering what a kroffle is, think croissant meets waffle. The dough goes directly into a waffle press, giving you those familiar waffle ridges while keeping the pastry-style texture.
Lokma has taken the idea even further with both sweet and savoury variations. So even though lokma is obviously the star of the show, there’s more on the menu if you want to try something different.
Don’t Forget the Milkshakes!
The one in my video was loaded with Oreo-style cookie pieces and topped generously, definitely not your everyday glass of milk with a little ice cream thrown in. It’s the kind of drink that could almost qualify as dessert by itself. If you’re ordering lokma AND a milkshake, come hungry. Seriously.
Is Lokma Ottawa Worth Trying?
For me, yes! especially if you enjoy rich desserts and trying something different.
What makes Lokma interesting isn’t necessarily just one particular flavour. It’s the experience of taking a traditional Turkish-inspired pastry and having so many modern toppings and combinations to choose from. It’s also a great sharing dessert. Grab a box, choose a few different flavours and let everyone fight over which one is best.
Whether you’re looking for a dessert after dinner, planning a casual date night, hanging out with friends or just searching for a new Ottawa food spot to try, Lokma is worth having on your radar.
Just don’t blame me when you tell yourself you’re having “one more” and suddenly the box is empty.
