Burrito Gringo Ottawa Review: Huge Portions, Mexican Street Fries & One Seriously Good Quesadilla

Location: 566 Bronson Avenue, Ottawa, Ontario

There are restaurants you visit because they’re trending, and then there are those unexpected local spots that remind you why exploring Ottawa’s food scene can be so rewarding.

My recent visit to Burrito Gringo Mexican Grill on Bronson Avenue definitely fell into the second category.

I went in expecting a good burrito and some Mexican-inspired comfort food. What I didn’t expect was to learn more about the family behind the restaurant, discover just how generous the portions are, and leave with a new favourite quesadilla spot in Ottawa.

And before you assume Burrito Gringo is another big restaurant franchise, there’s an interesting story behind it.

Burrito Gringo Mexican Grill - Bronson Avenue Ottawa

Burrito Gringo Is a Family-Owned Ottawa Restaurant

One of the highlights of my visit was getting the opportunity to speak with the owner.

He explained to me that Burrito Gringo isn’t a franchise operation but a family-owned and operated restaurant business.

That completely changed the way I looked at the restaurant.

Despite the polished branding and established feel of Burrito Gringo, there’s still a local, family-business story behind it. You can see some of that personality in the Bronson location itself, from the Mexican-themed artwork on the walls to the way the food is prepared right in front of customers.

The owner also shared something particularly interesting: according to him, Burrito Gringo was the original creator of its Mexican Street Fries concept.

And after seeing the portion that arrived at my table, I knew I had to try them.

First Impression: This Place Is Seriously Clean

Before talking about the food, there was something else that stood out almost immediately.

The cleanliness.

Restaurant cleanliness is something I pay attention to, particularly when food is being prepared at an open counter where customers can see the ingredients and preparation process.

At the Bronson Avenue Burrito Gringo, the food-preparation area was right there in view. During my visit, I noticed the employees consistently wiping down the countertops and keeping the utensils and work surfaces clean. No Cap, I was highly impressed and this was before I even introduced myself as an influencer who is here to film.

It wasn’t just a quick cleanup when things got messy. The staff seemed genuinely attentive to maintaining the area throughout service. For a fast-casual restaurant, that made a very positive first impression and you can feel the food was all made and served with care and caution.

The Portions Are HUGE!!!

Now we need to talk about what may be Burrito Gringo’s biggest selling point:

You get a lot of food for your money.

Most of the items here fall roughly within the CAD $10–$20 range, depending on what you order and the customizations you choose.

But when you see the portions, that price range starts making a lot of sense.

The burrito in particular was enormous.

In the video from my visit, you can see the ingredients being piled onto the tortilla before it’s wrapped. We’re not talking about a thin burrito with most of the space taken up by tortilla. It was packed with ingredients, sauce and toppings before being tightly wrapped and grilled.

Then came the Mexican Street Fries.

Again, they did not hold back. If you’re someone who judges restaurant value by whether you actually leave full, Burrito Gringo understood the assignment.

What I Tried at Burrito Gringo

I tried three of the restaurant’s offerings during my visit:

Mexican Street Fries, a Burrito Wrap and a Quesadilla.

All three were filling, flavourful and generously portioned, but there was one very clear winner for me.

Mexican Street Fries

The Mexican Street Fries are probably the most visually impressive dish I tried.

Forget ordering a tiny side of fries next to your meal. This is essentially a meal of its own.

The serving comes loaded with toppings, Meat, cheese, sauce and your chosen ingredients, creating that combination of crispy fries, creamy toppings and savoury flavours you’d expect from proper loaded fries. The portion I received came in a large takeout-style box and was absolutely packed.

Knowing the story the owner told me about Burrito Gringo being behind the original Mexican Street Fries concept made trying them even more interesting.

Whether you’re ordering them as your main meal or planning to share, come hungry.

The Burrito Wrap

Then there was the burrito.

Watching it being made might actually be half the experience.

You choose your ingredients and watch everything get layered onto a large tortilla in front of you. Mine was loaded generously before being wrapped up and finished on the grill.

The result?

A properly hefty burrito. You know when you pick up a burrito and immediately realize you may have underestimated what you’ve gotten yourself into?

That was this burrito.

More importantly, though, it wasn’t just big for the sake of being big. The combination of ingredients gave it plenty of flavour, and being able to customize what’s going inside means you can build it around what you actually enjoy.

For anyone looking for a filling lunch or dinner around downtown Ottawa, the value here is difficult to ignore.

My Favourite: The Quesadilla ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

And finally, we have my winner.

The quesadilla gets 5/5 from me.

Out of everything I tried during this visit, this was easily my favourite. I will give the Mexican Street Fries a shoutout though because that stuff hit me too but just that the Quesadilla’s were just too bliss.

There’s something about a good quesadilla that sounds incredibly simple on paper but depends heavily on getting the proportions right.

You want enough filling to make every bite substantial, plenty of flavour and cheese, but you still need that grilled tortilla holding everything together.

Burrito Gringo nailed that balance for me.

It was loaded without becoming a complete mess to eat, flavourful throughout and had exactly the comforting, satisfying quality I want from a quesadilla.

The Mexican Street Fries may be the attention-grabber and the massive burrito might be the obvious first order for a newcomer, but I’m going back for that quesadilla.

Fresh Food Made Right in Front of You

Another thing I liked about the Bronson location is being able to see your meal come together. I happened to meet the Owner on my visit and hes explained to me how the meats they use are all home prepped meat and are slow-cooked for about 16hours each day to achieve the flavour, this was insane to me and no wonder i felt so at peace with my stomach after eating from Burritto Gringo.

The in house sauces they use take almost 8 hours to fully prep. This is such a green flag for a family-run resturant who are looking to bridge a gap and feed customers with nothing but healthy Mexican food.

The restaurant uses the familiar build-your-own format, with ingredients laid out behind the counter and your order assembled as you choose what goes into it. Gives you options to mix-match and remove items you dont really feel like eating from your plate/bowl or wrap.

But what impressed me here was how generous the employees were with those ingredients.

Watching my burrito being assembled, there wasn’t a sense that every extra piece of chicken, corn, beans or topping was being carefully rationed. The finished product genuinely looked substantial and extremely huge!!!!!!

That’s particularly important now when eating out has become considerably more expensive. Paying restaurant prices and receiving a tiny portion is one of the fastest ways to make a meal feel disappointing.

That wasn’t a problem here.

The Atmosphere

Burrito Gringo isn’t trying to be a fancy sit-down Mexican restaurant.

It’s casual, colourful and straightforward.

The Bronson location incorporates Mexican-inspired imagery and artwork into the interior, giving the restaurant more personality than a generic fast-food dining room.

It’s the type of place that works for a quick lunch, a casual meal with friends, takeout or one of those evenings when you want something substantial without spending a fortune. And let me tell you, the service is at speed of light! when I walked in, there about 12 customers in line waiting to order and just within 5 mins it was already my turn to build my burritto.

And because the portions are so large, I’d recommend thinking carefully before automatically ordering several sides. Eventhough the food is too good you won’t realize when you’d eat it all.

Seriously.

They feed you here.

Is Burrito Gringo on Bronson Worth Visiting?

For me, yes.

There were three things that really defined my experience: cleanliness, portion size and flavour.

Meeting the owner and hearing the family story behind Burrito Gringo also made the visit more memorable. It’s easy to look at an established restaurant brand and assume you’re eating at another franchise, so learning about the family-operated business behind it gave me a different appreciation for the restaurant.

If you’re visiting for the first time, the Mexican Street Fries are worth trying simply because they’re one of Burrito Gringo’s signature offerings.

If you’re hungry, get the burrito.

But if you’re asking me what I would personally order again?

Quesadilla. No hesitation. 5/5.

Final Verdict

Burrito Gringo on Bronson Avenue turned out to be one of those places where the portions look impressive on camera but are somehow even bigger when the food is sitting in front of you.

Between the enormous burrito, loaded Mexican Street Fries and my five-star quesadilla, I certainly didn’t leave hungry.

Add in the exceptionally clean food-preparation area I observed, employees who were constantly keeping their workspace tidy, and the opportunity to learn about the family behind the restaurant, and there was much more to this visit than simply grabbing a burrito.

If you’re in Ottawa and want Mexican-inspired comfort food that prioritizes big portions, plenty of flavour and value for money, Burrito Gringo’s Bronson Avenue location deserves a spot on your list.

And if you go?
